Level 2 Trail-Blazing Workshop

Level 2 Trail-Blazing Workshop

Our most dedicated trail builders will be learning some more complex trail-building techniques at our Level 2 Trail Blazing Workshop on March 26 and 27.  Mark Wood of Trail Holistics will be back to lead this intensive weekend session. Sadly, the workshop can accommodate only 8 people, so we’ll be issuing invitations to the folks most committed to our trail-building work days. If you’re interested, reach out to julia@raedwulf.org. In the meantime, be sure to pitch in at upcoming work days.

Attend Our Annual General Meeting

Attend Our Annual General Meeting

Mark your calendars for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday, March 23, at 6 pm. Join us to hear an overview of our successful 2021 and to learn about plans for 2022. This meeting marks the turning point as we leave the guidance of the province’s Rural Dividend Fund and chart our way forward as a full-fledged Society, complete with an experienced board and enthusiastic trail-blazer members. We’ll also be electing new board members. We’re planning to meet in the Cowichan Lake Recreation Centre Curling Lounge, but if Covid guidelines necessitate a location change, we’ll let you know via email and Facebook.

Shout out to Mosaic

Building trails on private forest lands would not have been possible without the generosity of Mosaic Forest Management. The company has supported Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society by entering into a land-use agreement on its Fairservice Main and Christopher Rock properties and has also provided seed money for tools and trail-building materials. To show our appreciation, we presented an artistically carved wood plaque to Mosaic representatives, Pam Jorgensen and Molly Hudson, at our recent Trail-building Workshop. CVRD Representatives Klaus Kuhn (Area I) and Ian Morrison (Area F) and Lake Cowichan Mayor, Bob Day, were on hand to recognize the occasion.

Trail Blazers Graduate!

Trail Blazers Graduate!

Mark Woods of Trail Holistics shared his favourite tools and his learnings from years of cutting paths through the bush in BC at our Level 1 Trail Building Workshop in Lake Cowichan on October 16 and 17. Sponsored by the Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society, the hands-on session attracted 18 trail lovers with a mix of wilderness interests: hiking, biking, para-sailing, trail running, and dog walking. The rainy Saturday morning kicked off with an indoor session that covered the basics of building trails. After lunch, it was “boots on” for a damp walk in the woods and learning to use a clinometer to gauge hill steepness. Happily, the weather was perfect on Sunday for participants to get their hands dirty and put into practice the trail tactics learned the day before, using all those tools with strange names.

On Saturday, October 16, and Sunday, October 17, the Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society (CLTBS) is sponsoring a hands-on trail-building workshop taught by renowned Whistler trail builder Mark Woods of Trail Holistics. The Saturday morning session starts at 9 a.m. at the Cowichan Lake Recreation Centre with some background on basic trail building. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, you’ll put theory into action actually building trails in the woods, so come dressed for the work and the weather. All participants will receive special CLTBS work gloves. The class is free for volunteer trail builders. To sign up, email Julia@desmoinesrowing.org by Friday, October 8. Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society and Mosaic Forest Management Partnering to Provide Recreational Trails

Lake Cowichan, BC – Mosaic Forest Management is providing access to more than 1,000 hectares of private forest land in the Cowichan Lake area for non-motorized recreational use in a new agreement with the Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society.

“We are proud to see this partnership begin,” said Trail Blazers’ President Bob Day. “To be able to work with Mosaic to provide first-class biking and hiking opportunities make this an especially exciting opportunity for our club and the Cowichan Lake area. We also appreciate the support of the Ts’uubaa astx people since the trails will showcase the beauty of their unceded territory.”

For the past two years, the Trail Blazers, Community Futures Cowichan and Mosaic have been working together on a master trail plan to construct and maintain non-motorized trails in the Fair Service area just outside Lake Cowichan.

“We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia”, said Community Futures Cowichan General Manager Cathy Robertson. “With the support of the BC Rural Dividend Program, this project is meeting industry-recognized standards for safety and infrastructure for the trail network, including developing new trails, improvements to existing trails, trail ratings, standardized signage and mapping to enhance safety along with the recreational user experience.”

“The new trail plan on Mosaic-managed private forest land in the Cowichan Lake area will be a popular addition to the town and surrounding area, said Mosaic’s Director of Sustainability, Molly Hudson. “This partnership will enable investment in a safe trail network and supports a shared vision to the coexistence of the working forest and recreational access opportunities to benefit communities and the economy by creating value for local recreationalists and tourists alike.”

About Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society
Above the headwaters of the Heritage Cowichan River lies Cowichan Lake and the communities of Lake Cowichan, Youbou, Mesachie, and Honeymoon Bay. The lake has long been known for forestry and outdoor recreation, but more access to our natural assets is key. That’s why the Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society is planning to enhance and develop trails for hiking and biking. With the help of provincial funding, a group of local citizens were able to hire consultants in 2017 to help determine what activities might expand the local tourist season. Trails for hiking and biking were suggested, a detailed action plan was presented, and the Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society was formed.
