Mark Woods of Trail Holistics shared his favourite tools and his learnings from years of cutting paths through the bush in BC at our Level 1 Trail Building Workshop in Lake Cowichan on October 16 and 17. Sponsored by the Cowichan Lake Trail Blazers Society, the hands-on session attracted 18 trail lovers with a mix of wilderness interests: hiking, biking, para-sailing, trail running, and dog walking. The rainy Saturday morning kicked off with an indoor session that covered the basics of building trails. After lunch, it was “boots on” for a damp walk in the woods and learning to use a clinometer to gauge hill steepness. Happily, the weather was perfect on Sunday for participants to get their hands dirty and put into practice the trail tactics learned the day before, using all those tools with strange names.
